WIFSY #28

September 8, 2016

When I First Saw you, WIFSY for short, is an original monthly feature here on Sailing Through Books that consists of writing a made-up synopsis for a book based on its cover and title only. Essentially judging a books by its cover, yes.
More details over here.

Hello cupcakes!

September is here, which means it's time for another WIFSY, but also Fall and another giveaway! Here are the covers for this month, and the one I picked.

Title: The hundred lies of Lizzie Lovett
Author: Chelsea Sedoti
Publisher: Sourcebooks
Release date: January 3rd 2017

My made-up synopsis

I stand up, my hands behind my back to hide how much they're shaking.
-Hi, my name is Hannah... I'm sorry, Lizzie, and I'm a compulsive liar.
I'm so used to coming up with fake names that it has become second nature.
-Hi Lizzie, answers the twelve person in the room with me.
The man in charge of this session offers me a warm smile.
-Why don't you tell us a bit about you and your compulsion?
I look around, unsure of where to start, and suddenly, the words are pourring out.
-You know, I used to lie for fun, just to see how far I could go with the stories I made-up. But then, it got kind of addictive. Everywhere I went, I could be someone else, have a different story. I could make up a life for myself, you know? One that was ten times better than the one I had... But then people starting catching on, I would get mixed up in my stories and slowly, all of my friends left me... No one even talked to me... And then this thing happened, and I tried telling my family, but even they couldn't, wouldn't believe me...
I shake my head, my voice now a whisper.
-I lied so much that people didn't know which version of me to believe... I don't know which one to believe...
-Thank you Lizzie.

The real deal

A teenage misfit named Hawthorn Creely inserts herself in the investigation of missing person Lizzie Lovett, who disappeared mysteriously while camping with her boyfriend. Hawthorn doesn't mean to interfere, but she has a pretty crazy theory about what happened to Lizzie. In order to prove it, she decides to immerse herself in Lizzie's life. That includes taking her job... and her boyfriend. It's a huge risk — but it's just what Hawthorn needs to find her own place in the world.

Verdict

Well, this is pretty much the usual: my synopsis is completely off and the real one is amazing.

I thought this was going to be a story about a girl getting caught up in her lies, but it's actually a story about about a girl living a lie to solve a disappearance. How amazing is that? Definitely adding this one to my TBR!
