When I First Saw You, WIFSY for short, is an original monthly feature here on Sailing Through Books that consists of writing a made-up synopsis for a book based on its cover and title only. Essentially judging a book by its cover, yes.
Hello cupcakes!
Are you ready for another round of WIFSY? You better because that's what's happening today!
Title: The Edge of Everything
Author: Jeff Giles
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA
Release date: January 31st 2017
My made-up synopsis:
Saying that Cade's life was shit would have been an understatement.
Not that he wanted attention, or even worse pity, from anyone. It was just the truth.
His long time boyfriend? He had just died in a freak accident caused by a bomb. Because yes, there was a lot of accident like that lately due to the war.
War that happened to be between humans and NH, AKA "non-humans"
To make matters worse, Cade had been enrolled against his will for a suicide mission, leading him and his crew to the end of the world. Not metaphorically, literally. As in the ground just stopped, the sky turned to nothing and you were left standing on a ledge you never thought even existed.
What's the point of it all, really? What's the point when it's one bad news after another, one more death on your conscience, one less thing to help you hold on to your will to live?
The real deal
It's been a shattering year for seventeen-year-old Zoe, who's still reeling from her father's shockingly sudden death in a caving accident and her neighbors' mysterious disappearance from their own home. Then on a terrifying sub-zero, blizzardy night in Montana, she and her brother are brutally attacked in a cabin in the woods--only to be rescued by a mysterious bounty hunter they call X.
X is no ordinary bounty hunter. He is from a hell called the Lowlands, sent to claim the soul of Zoe's evil attacker and others like him. Forbidden to reveal himself to anyone other than his victims, X casts aside the Lowlands' rules for Zoe. As X and Zoe learn more about their different worlds, they begin to question the past, their fate, and their future. But escaping the Lowlands and the ties that bind X might mean the ultimate sacrifice for both of them.
Verdict
I think I was kind of close?
I mean, both my made-up character and the real MC have gone through some painful times: death of a parent, death of a lover... And there's another "world" people don't know about in the real story as well as in my made-up one.
The story itself? Totally off. But I'm pleasantly surprised to have guessed some small elements!
Now about that real synopsis. Personally, I'm getting a Black Ice vibe, which for me translates to "AVOID AT ALL COST!". But I've been reading some reviews on Goodreads and people seem to be loving The Edge of Everything... Maybe I'll give it a chance? I feel bad, ruling out a book because of one bad experience. Like people ruling out vampires because of Twilight (although I really liked Twilight but that's a story for another day...)
