Minimalism as a booklover

June 2, 2017

Hello cupcakes!

Here's some news: I've been really into minimalism lately. Although I'm far from being an expert, I've found that getting rid of old clothes and trying to keep only the essentials in every aspect of my life makes me feel at peace, calm, and simply happy.
A big step I wasn't ready to take yet was tackling my bookshelves.

To give you an idea, until a week ago, I owned over 500 books, which amounts to a wall of books or, to put it simply, a hell of a lot of books! I absolutely loved going back to my room and seeing all of them lined up on shelves. The time I felt the most at home was when I was with my books.

Let me share with you a little story that might sound familiar to you:

There once was a little who loved words. She liked reading them, she liked writing them, and she wanted them all around her. He dream house had a room dedicated to words, a personal library that would contain all the books in the world. She swore to herself that one day that dream would come true. The end.

I'm that little girl. You're that little girl. Most of us book lovers are that little girl!

Until suddenly, I wasn't that little girl anymore.
Which is when I came to the conclusion that some of my precious books had to go. I decided that I would, to the best of my abilities, be a minimalist book lover.

How do I plan on doing that? Good question, here is my answer!

When I First Saw You #34

March 9, 2017
When I First Saw You, WIFSY for short, is an original monthly feature here on Sailing Through Books that consists of writing a made-up synopsis for a book based on its cover and title only. Essentially judging a book by its cover, yes.

Hello there!
Why yes, another months has past and I'm back yet again with another WIFSY post. But be excited cupcakes! I'm slowly getting out of my blogging slump and I have some new posts coming your way!
For now, let's dive right into this month's WIFSY, shall we?

Hello cupcakes!
How are you this fine evening? Or is it morning where you are? Regardless, I hope everything is going well! This month's covers were all pretty good looking, but I managed to pick only one. Here they are!

Well hello there!
It's been so long since the last time we spoke! I love what you did with your hair! And is that a new shirt? Lovely!

My apologies for the lateness of this WIFSY post (again), but I'm here now so let's not waste any more time and jump right into it!
The choices this month were all really interesting and I had a hard time picking one, but I finally decided to go with Beautiful Broken Girls.

I'm slacking, I know. And I want to get back to blogging so badly! Problem is, I don't want to share with you guys some quick, shitty post simply for the sake of sharing something. I want to write good reviews, I want to write interesting discussion posts, and right now, I'm having trouble figuring out how to do that amidst everything else.

But today, although a day late I admit, is the second Thursday of the month, which means it's time for WIFSY!

Here were the choices this month, and I have to say I had a hard time picking a cover because they all look so interesting!

Hello cupcakes!

After months of trying to find the opportunity to participate in Conversation, the time is finally here, guys! Conversation is this really nice feature that aims to start conversation through the blogosphere and help bloggers get to know each other a bit more. Pretty cool, right?

Today's topic is:

Do you forget book as easily as you read them?

Title: I have a bad feeling about this
Author: Jeff Strand
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Release date: January 1st 2014

A while back, I tried, to the best of my abilities, to review The Greatest Zombie Movie Ever, by Jeff Strand. I say "tried" because in my opinion, I didn't do the book justice. Today, I'm going to try to review I Have a Bad Feeling About This.

The raven Boys, AKA the book that didn't live up to the hype

- REVIEW - The raven Boys, AKA the book that didn't live up to the hype

Title: The Raven Boys
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Publisher: Scholastic
Release date: September 18th 2012
ADD IT ON GOODREADS

The Raven Boys has been on my to-read list for a long time and now that I read it, I don't understand the excitement that surrounds it.
The one thing that comes to my mind when I think about The Raven Cycle trilogy is this: over-hyped. Okay, fine, it might not be fair to judge an entire series by the first book, but at the same time, if I'm not hooked right away, why bother to continue?

The main thing that turned me off while reading this book was how unreal everything and everyone seemed. The beauty of books is that they make you believe in made-up worlds and magic creatures, they make you believe that whatever the author chose to write about is possible; real. Maggie Stiefvater? She didn't succeed in making me believe her story.

Firstly, the characters. I'm sorry but as rich as you may be Gansey, I simply don't buy your act, especially when you have other rich friends behaving nothing like you. And Blue? One question: what about school! And that name.. I want to take you seriously, but I can't.

Second, the story. I felt like the plot wasn't going anywhere. I was lost with the whole ley lines story, and I felt like nothing really happened. Stuff did happen though, I was entertained while reading, but I wasn't dying to get back to the book, you know?

Also, the relationship between Blue and Noah was a bit laughable. To me, it seemed to come out of nowhere. Plus, Blue is clearly meant to end up with Gansey, Noah and Ronan are probably gay, and the story about Blue killng her true love if she kisses him? Come on! Give me more explanation because right now it sounds like a fairy tale!

The Raven Boys was entertaining, don't get me wrong. It was far from being bad, but after all the good things I heard about it, I felt let down. To be frank, the book felt more like a first draft of something that could be great.

But hey, I'm clearly in the minority here, maybe I just completely missed the point.

Take care cupcakes!

Sophie

The Raven Boys is far from being a bad book, it's simply another case of "over-hype"...

When I First Saw You #22 -guest post by Jessica @ Princessica Books-

May 5, 2016

What is When I First Saw You?

When I First Saw You, or WIFSY for short, is a weekly meme created here on Sailing Through Books and co-hosted by Izel from A Bookish Flower and yours truly. It consists of sharing a first impressions of a book in the form of a made-up synopsis, so basically judging a book by it's cover yes.

How does it work?

Every week, a new cover is chosen and is shared here at the bottom of the page. You write a synopsis for the book with the cover and title as your only guide. Then, you compare it to the real synopsis and laugh at how off you were or congratulate yourself on your amazing deduction skills!
You are free to post any day of the week, but the weekly WIFSY post will be up every Thursday with a link up so you can share your take on the week's cover.

Hello my little cupcakes!

Today's post is important because of two things:

  • I have the lovely Jess, from Princessica Books on the blog with us today to participate in WIFSY! Her made-up synopsis is SO cool! You'll find all of her info down bellow!
  • GIVEAWAY UPDATES! The winner of our April giveaway is *drum roll* Melanie B.! Congratulation girl!
ALSO! Izel and I have decided to change things up a bit. Instead of doing a giveaway each month, we'll be doing one for each season, which means that the next one will be in June, just in time for summer vacation!

Now that that's all out of the way, I give this metaphorical keyboard to Jess! Enjoy!

Hi guys! How are you today? I'm good thanks for asking! In the past week, I've finished two books which were really good (reviews coming soon) and I started to get back into blogging, so I'm really happy about that! School wise, it's been a bit hectic, but what can you do right? I just take it one thing at a time and do my best; it's almost over anyway!

This is the last WIFSY for April, so make sure to enter our giveaway to win one of the four books featured this month!

Let's get into it!

Hello everyone!
Yeah, I know WIFSY posts are the only post I've been uploading lately and to be frank, if it wasn't for WIFSY, I probably wouldn't be uploading any posts at all! But I do have a review coming soon as well as a "real" blogging post... You'll see!

And now, I present to you this week's cover!
