When I First Saw You, WIFSY for short, is an original monthly feature here on Sailing Through Books that consists of writing a made-up synopsis for a book based on its cover and title only. Essentially judging a book by its cover, yes.
Hello cupcakes!
How are you this fine evening? Or is it morning where you are? Regardless, I hope everything is going well! This month's covers were all pretty good looking, but I managed to pick only one. Here they are!
Author: Sarah Nicole Lemon
Publisher: Amulet Books
Release date: 2017
My made-up synopsis
Shirley was a bad ass. With her motorcycle, her black hair, her leather jacket, it was unquestionable. People at school knew it, people in the neighborhood knew it, and she knew it too. Didn't mean she liked it though.
People were afraid of her. They thought she was part of Girls Rule, the biker gang widely known across the country, but that was completely ridiculous! After all, she was only seventeen.
But when Shirley's boyfriend Steve went missing, when rumors of male prostitution started going around and people started pointing fingers in her directions, Shirley decided she should become who everybody thought she already was. If she wanted a chance to get Steve back, it was the only way.
She joined Girls Rule.
The Real Deal
Tourmaline Harris’s life hit pause at fifteen, when her mom went to prison because of Tourmaline’s unintentionally damning testimony. But at eighteen, her home life is stable, and she has a strong relationship with her father, the president of a local biker club known as the Wardens.
Virginia Campbell’s life hit fast-forward at fifteen, when her mom “sold” her into the services of a local lawyer: a man for whom the law is merely a suggestion. When Hazard sets his sights on dismantling the Wardens, he sends in Virginia, who has every intention of selling out the club—and Tourmaline.
But the two girls are stronger than the circumstances that brought them together, and their resilience defines the friendship at the heart of this powerful debut novel.
Verdict
It was pretty easy to figure out the motorcycle part. But the rest? I was WAY off! I had this idea of male prostitution (instead of female prostitution for a change!) with a biker gang made entirely of girls. I thought I was getting somewhere. But Sarah Nicole Lemon is so ahead of the game here because her story sounds BAD ASS! Talk about some girl power! I already know the friendship between Tourmaline an Virginia is going to be lovely, and from the reviews I've read, there are some pretty interesting male characters! (no, I'm not giggling, you are!)
Bottom line is: I wasn't close at all and the real story sounds amazing!
